How to acquire a puppy? Buy or adoption?

Once we have reflected on all these aspects, if we decide to bring a puppy home we must clarify the way to get it, that is, if we want to adopt or buy. Both options have advantages and disadvantages. In any case, any decision is good if we take it responsibly.

Purchase: Generally, dogs intended for trade are purebred dogs. A breed dog can satisfy all tastes - although these will always be conditioned by the fact that a breed must meet certain standards. Apart from the specific questions of each race, as a common rule we must take into account that the size, physical characteristics and character are usually predictable - depending on the genetic load we know, of course -. If we choose a breed, we can also have more information about the diet or needs of any kind you may have. On the other hand, dogs are more prone to suffer congenital diseases and are also less resistant to some diseases than mongrel dogs.

Adoption: The most adopted dogs are mestizos, and their best characteristic is that they are unique and unrepeatable. It is true that we will not have a priori sure information about what their characteristics will be in terms of behavior and morphology, but if we choose to adopt a mongrel, we will usually have a dog that will often keep the best of the breed and who will be less likely to inherit some diseases and defects. In the mestizos it is the nature that makes the genetic selection - not the human one - and it is a general opinion, that this one is rarely mistaken.

To choose well we must meditate and let us advise to know which dog will adapt best to our characteristics and ways of life. It is advisable to consult a veterinarian, who will talk to us about the type of dog or about the breed that will suit best our family situation or our space at home. He will help us to solve any doubt we have. Possibly this is one of the most important visits that we are going to make to the veterinarian throughout the life of our future dog.

A dog will accompany us during many years of its life. In this time there will be many people who go through separations, couple changes, birth of children, changes of home, work, city or personal situation. If when deciding to bring a dog home we are not fully willing to follow us, in all the changes that may occur in our lives, it is better that we do not have a dog. The dog is our responsibility.
